A few rules will apply to the movie I watch..
1. I must not have watched the movie in the last 6 months
2. It will not be any of the big franchise movie i.e. Jason, Freddy,Leatherface etc...
3. The only exceptions to the above rule will be on the 31st when I watch all the Halloween movies and the newest chucky movie which I will be watching.
4. I will not watch Nine Lives...Valentine or Blood Orgy of the She-Devils cause those movies suck worse then any Hulk Hogan movie ever could.
Now that I got the Rules out of the way on to today's review..
Sweet Sixteen (1981)
This is not to be confused with those stupid My Psycho Sweet Sixteen movies MTV put out....
I should start out with the cast which is pretty solid I must say...which includes
Bo Hopkins who is a solid character actor who chances are you have seen in something you have watched
Patrick Macnee-best know for playing John Steed in the original Avengers
Larry Storch-best known for his role in F-Troop as Corporal Agarn and in a bit of trivia is the first person to ever voice The Joker in a cartoon version of Batman
and last but not least
Dana Kimbell-who was a major cutie and looked a bit like Mandy Moore and is best know for being the "last girl" in Friday the 13th part 3
Now on to the movie....
The Plot-
When Melissa Morgan (Aleisa Shirley), an attractive big-city girl, moves to a small Texas town, she creates quite a stir with her beauty and promiscuous attitude. She's 15 going on 16, and all the boys at her new school are anxious to get to know her. Suddenly, the younger brother of a local hell raiser (Don Stroud) is brutally murdered and the town sheriff (Bo Hopkins) must try to solve the murder before the killer strikes again. Along to help him is his Nancy Drew-ish daughter (Dana Kimmell). (Thanks to wikipedia for the summery)
I will say this was solid little movie...pretty low on the body count...a little nudity..I predicted the killer about half way through the movie (I was right by the way) although how we got there and the motive was out of left field and in my opinion not properly fleshed out..
This could have been one of the classics of the early horror/slasher boom but falls just short with a plot that feels rushed and is not given the time to develop with too much time being devoted to a side story that goes now and feels out of place in this movie..take that out add just one or two more kills and a tad bit more nudity and flush out the back story of the killer more and we would be talking major cult classic which would probably be remade..actually I would be open to a remake of this..just to see if they could get it right
Overall I give this 2.5 out of 5 stars....
Fun Fact- Made in 1981 it wasn't released until 1983 probably on the hills of Dana Kimbell's turn in Friday the 13th part 3....

Hey... Dana Kimmell (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dana_Kimmell), I remember her well. Still. To this day. I think she is a newscaster now somewhere in the U.S. Has two kids from a previous marriage.
ReplyDeleteWhat is the best video format to get a copy of that movie in? VHS? I still have one of those players, in addition to DVD. Just let me know, seems like a solid movie to see when I have the free time.
Take care, Spiffy One... :-)
